About the author

Maciej Grelewicz

I was born on April 4, 1982, in Lódz, Poland. In 2001 I started Architecture and Urban Planning studies in my hometown. I have finished those studies in January 2008 and received master degree. In 2006 my project was awarded a honourable mention in International Velux Award competition for students of architecture. Currently I am working in an architecture office in Lódz. My main objective is designing sustainable, legibly modern buildings, which will respect users aesthetical and functional needs. I am interested in literature, music and sport.

About the project

Golden Library

"In the beginning of XXI-st century library is no longer a fortress of knowledge accessible only for handful of initiated. To attract readers it has to use weapons typical for commercial market. That is why many contemporary libraries are eye-catching buildings offering their users much more than just a place to read.

My library is designed in the very centre of Lódz – third biggest city in Poland. Location near shops, restaurants, cultural and educational centres makes this building easily accessible by people of different age, background and interests. To fulfil their needs building contains many functions supplementing library. Ground floor is a building’s ‘living room’ with open cafe and magazines reading-room. Higher there are located: a children’s library, mediatheque, educational and exposition spaces. Third and forth floor are containing main library. Above it, on the top of building there is a spacious reading-room open to roof terrace.

Very simple interiors with open plans are contrasted with ornamental facade. Whole building is covered by golden coloured panels with laser-cut ‘letter’ pattern. Art Nouveau font designed by Otto Eckmann is a reference to surrounding buildings, in majority erected at the turn of XIX-th and XX-th century. Use of golden colour and big signs makes this facade a light pastiche of eclectic environment. Golden facade is a kind of shiny, eye-catching ‘dress’ of building, attracting passers-by to get in. It makes this library a legibly modern landmark, without arrogant domination over historical neighbourhood."
